WHAT IS CENTRAL AIR & HOW DOES IT WORK?

People often think of air conditioning when they think of central air, but this kind of system can heat and cool your entire home if it has the proper components.

Most central air conditioning systems have two units, one outdoor and one indoor. These two units work together to distribute cool air and remove warm air through the ducts in your home.

Here’s a basic explanation of how central cooling works:

  1.  A fan from your indoor unit turns on with a call for cooling.
  2.  The air is filtered to remove dust and debris.
  3.  The newly filtered hot air is blown over an evaporator coil (which is filled with liquid refrigerant) that cools that air.
  4.  The cooled air is distributed through your home via its air ducts.
  5.  The evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the air and turns the refrigerant into gas.
  6.  The gas refrigerant passes through a copper tube into the outdoor unit and enters a compressor, which then pressurizes the gas and sends it to the condenser coil.
  7.  The heat from the refrigerant is released outside, and the refrigerant turns back into a liquid so the process can start over.

Central heating works similarly by moving air through the ducts in your home. Depending on the type of HVAC system you have, the heating component could work in a couple of different ways.

The two main types of central heating are done through furnaces or heat pumps.

Furnaces produce heat quickly by burning a natural fuel source to distribute through your home’s ducts. Heat pumps work in all weather conditions and can switch between cooling and heating according to the temperature.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CENTRAL AIR SYSTEM?

Central air is a great solution for larger apartments and homes. It can be used to cool multiple rooms at once so you don’t have to have a unit in each room.

Other benefits of central air include:

  • Reduced humidity levels
  • Improved air quality
  • Low maintenance
  • Adds to your home’s resale value
