When to Replace Your HVAC Unit

When you perform regular maintenance on your air conditioning and furnace systems, newer units can last for over 15 years. 

Sometimes, though, you move into a home that already has an older unit that needs to be replaced. Or you have lived in your home for several years and have a well-loved unit that is coming to its end. 

How do you know when that unit needs to be replaced?

• The Department of Energy recommends replacing your HVAC, A/C, or furnace every 10 years for maximum efficiency.
• If repair costs are more than half the cost of replacing the unit, it can be more cost-effective to replace it. 
• If your energy bills keep increasing, it might be time for a new unit. The efficiency of older units tends to decline and can cause energy bills to become more expensive.
• When you can’t keep your home at a consistent, comfortable temperature, your HVAC unit could be on its way out. 
• A lot of dust or humidity in your home is also an indicator of a poor-functioning unit. 
• If odd sounds or unusual smells are coming from your unit, even after repair, it’s time to replace it. 

When is the Best Time to Replace Your A/C or Furnace?

If you have any problems that keep your A/C or furnace from running properly, you should schedule a replacement immediately. 

But if your unit is running still and it is just that time for a replacement, we recommend scheduling this before the intense warm or cold seasons so you don’t have issues that come up during those times. Always opt for sooner rather than later.
